Chapter 45. Checkmate

Lara heaves a sigh of relief as she sinks into her office chair. Finally, she did it, and got it over with. At least she can rest. She rolls her chair, so it faces the roof-to-floor glass window. She appreciates the entire view of Grosthe City with a vague smile on her face.

Croft Incorporation will survive, against all odds.

A knock on the door pulls her back to reality. She swivels around.

“Please, come in.” She echoes, and immediately, Carter sweeps in hurriedly, clad in his usual black tuxedo with his hair nearly brushed backward.

“Carter, I was not expecting to see you this soon…” Lara's eyes widened in surprise, but Carter remains mute. He simply tossed a newspaper on her table and grabbed the TV remote.

“All hell is let lose at Croft Incorporation. News reaching us this morning is that Lara Croft, the priced jewel of Late Richard Croft's empire is pregnant.” A female newscaster's voice booms out of the TV speakers.
