Chapter 69
Carolina returned to her rented room, a small attic on the top floor of a run-down building. This place was much worse than her previous room. It was cold in the winter and scorching in the summer. But she couldn’t go back to her old room. that would risk someone discovering her.
Someone knocked on her door. Carolina opened it and saw the landlady.
"Hello, is there something you need?" she asked politely with a smile.
Having gone through life and death, Carolina learned to use a mask to conceal her pain and vulnerability.
The landlady entered and glanced around the room. "Ah, I came to tell you I’m returning this room, no longer for rent. You’ve paid $2000 in rent in advance, and I will refund you $1000."
"Taking it back?" Carolina was surprised. "Didn’t you say I could continue to stay here? Why do you suddenly want it back?"
"I’ve changed my mind," the landlady replied disdainfully.
