Chapter 34
Elena was silent. For a long time. Her eyes stared out the window, watching the slowly descending twilight.
“I don’t know if it’s a good idea. My arrival would be unwelcome.”
Tamara nodded slowly. “Do you still have that wound?”
“It may not bleed anymore, but the marks haven’t gone away. But I’m also not the same woman I was five years ago.”
“Are you going?”
“Yes, I’m going to the funeral. Because they’re in Switzerland right now.”
Elena stared at the tablet screen once more. David’s picture was clearly displayed—an innocent face with a weak smile that broke the hearts of anyone who saw it. There was sadness in his eyes, but also something that could not be ignored: a cold feeling that infiltrated silently from a past that was not yet completely dead.
“I pity that child,” Elena said softly. Her voice was almost drowned out by the sound of her own breathing. “He’s not wrong. Not at all.”
