Scarlett’s POV
I was sure he did that one to spite me.
“…If she hasn’t ended up in the arms of the criminals, them knowing we have you is great collateral to have them stop looking at potential places she could be.” The finality in his voice was unmistakable, but I still found a way to challenge it.
“So, I’m some kind of collateral to you now? A bargaining tool?” I spat.
He shrugged and rolled his eyes in concurrence. “More or less. Now, get some rest or something. You need the energy in case we have to move fast.”
“I want to go home,” I stood my ground. “I stay all the way in Chicago. The bad guys would never even know I exist in that region.”
“That’s what you think, but you’ll have to make it to the airport first. Do you know how many things can go wrong in that short trip? And if nothing goes wrong, what if you catch a tail? You need to stay where I can protect you. Period.”
