Chapter 11. Immolation
The long shadows of dusk were stretching across the streets, blanketing most of the town by suppertime. After cleaning up dinner, Alex was making her way towards the center of the city to the Church; hopefully they buried Jack by now. She decided to wear all black; her dress, gloves, shoes, along with a black veil. It was the symbol of someone in mourning, and it helped to protect her from the setting sun’s last rays of light.
Alex clutches onto the wrapped bundle she was carrying as she walks into the Church’s perimeter. Graves flanked either side of the pathway, and the sounds of digging could be faintly heard from around the corner. Alex stops just short of the Church door and gives a knock, but there is no answer. She waited and listened to hear chanting from where she heard the digging. Alex peeks around the corner to see green wreaths placed on top of freshly turned soil, as well as several mourners and a priest in black robes standing over the new grave.
