Chapter 33. A Fair Warning
Brother Volo gasps and frets with each bandage he unwraps from the Hunter’s body. As he examines the lines of black stitches along Enshin’s right arm, the monk comments, “Some Hunters suspected you had run from battle, but I’d say you ran straight into one.”
“Certainly feels like it,” Enshin replies.
“Speaking of,” Veera starts, “what exactly were you doing that night?” Enshin remains quiet on the examination table as the young woman continues, “You’ve distracted everyone else with your mention of a vampire, but that still leaves the big gap in between our plan and your plan.”
The Hunter closes his eyes, trying to keep his heart from pounding and avoid burning. “There was no gap. I was supposed to lure the werewolves, but that vampire was an outside party. I wasn’t expecting to see it.” He really didn’t expect Alex to be a vampire, so that part was at least true.
Enshin winces as Volo brings a hand to his ribs and asks, “It’s only been a few days, hasn’t it?
