I don’t bother knocking as I enter Opal’s chambers. She wouldn’t have stopped if I walked in on her with another man again. I know from experience. Thankfully, she’s alone this time.
Opal sits at her vanity table and applies her make-up. I watch as she powders her nose. Her hair is in a complicated updo with dark curls framing her face. She carefully applies a blood red lipstick that makes her lips look fuller.
My wife has always been beautiful. Opal looks like a porcelain doll with her fair skin, blue eyes, and long black hair. When I first met her, I’d been attracted to her for her looks and the forbidden quality of her being my brother’s fiancée. I didn’t even care about her personality or how she treats anyone she thinks is beneath her.
Four years of marriage have wiped away any illusions I had of her being a good person. I’ve seen the brittle, selfish little girl Opal is deep down, always craving love and attention. It’s too similar
