Chapter 21

Elliot was just taking his seat. He fell back, a puzzled look on his face. He had just been through the worst five minutes of his life, trying to find a wound on his son’s body that apparently did not exist.

Ashley, too, seemed puzzled, and Charlotte had taken a break from consuming all the cake in one sitting and had chosen to share in the ongoing family drama.

“Okay, just to be clear,” Elliot said, drawing his body forward on the seat, “You think you had a wound this afternoon on your knee and somewhere in your body, and now, all of a sudden, you can’t find it anymore. Is that what you’re telling me?”

“I don’t think I had a wound,” Alex said, his voice sounding a little stronger. “I know I had a wound, wounds even. What I don’t know is what happened to them.”

Elliot looked at his son like he had suddenly taken leave of his senses.

“What?” Alex snapped, “You think I wouldn’t know if I had a wound?”

“I saw the wound,” Charlotte offered unexpectedl
