Chapter 407. Everything’s Complicated

Our pancake breakfast with Asher, Paige, and Sarah was unusually quiet. Normally, our meals were loud affairs filled with chatter about random things and bursts of laughter. But now, silence hung over us like a heavy cloud.
Sarah sat at the table, her fork hovering over her pancake, but her gaze was fixed on the white plate in front of her. Paige stared off into the distance, chewing absentmindedly on a piece of pancake she had just taken. Meanwhile, Asher and I exchanged glances from across the table, our expressions mirroring each other’s concern.
“What happened?” Asher mouthed silently, his brows slightly furrowed as he gestured subtly toward Sarah and Paige with a quick dart of his eyes.
“I’ll tell you later,” I mouthed back, motioning discreetly toward the interior of his house. My intention was clear: we’d talk once we were inside, away from the others. Asher nodded slightly in understanding, his lips pressing into a thin line.
