Chapter 62

Chloe’s POV

I sank back into my chair, relief and fear crashing into each other. Whoever sent that message knew exactly where to hit me.

I looked back at the email.

This was not Jack. He was too reckless. Too emotional.

This was calculated.

Margaret.

I closed my eyes briefly and took a slow breath. She was testing me. Letting me know she could reach into my life whenever she wanted.

I straightened and typed a reply.

[Do not involve my family.]

I hit send before I could overthink it.

The response came almost immediately.

[Then stop involving yourself with mine.]

My jaw tightened.

I did not reply again.

By the end of the day, my body was exhausted but my mind was alert, sharp with adrenaline. I packed my things carefully, scanning the office before I left. Jack was nowhere in sight. That did not comfort me.
