“I know what you’re thinking and the answer’s no, Jhoanna.” Hans grabbed my hand gently but firmly, breaking me out of my spiraling thoughts. His piercing blue eyes met mine, calm but resolute.

“What do you mean?” I asked, even though I already had an inkling of what he was about to say.

“You’re not getting involved in this,” Hans said firmly. “You’re pregnant, Jhoanna. You’ve got enough on your plate without diving into some ancient mystery or curse.”
