The first warning comes in the form of an unnatural silence only moments after I step outside to grab a few logs of firewood from the rack by the door.
The cold night air bites at my bare arms unforgivingly, punishing me for my decision to quickly grab what I need without slipping on a jacket. Seconds ago, the world had been alive with the sounds of the forest around us—a distant owl calling, the light breeze rustling the pines and kicking up stray dustings of snow.
Now it’s eerily silent.
