The next day, Nocturne was anxiously preparing to meet the dance instructor Golda had promised to send over. We were sitting at the new dining table, eating breakfast together, and I could see her anxiety pouring off her in waves.

 “It will be fine, my lady.” I reassured her. She scoffed at my words but said nothing in response. I scowled. I tried to think of what I could do to get her mind off her worries, then remembered I had questions about her grandmother, the goddess of death. “When will your grandmother arrive?” I asked, changing the subject.

 “It is…complicated. I may need to do a ritual to summon her, but it is not one I can do on my own.” Nocturne huffed.

 “Something you cannot do yourself?” I teased. “How awful.” Nocturne playfully swatted me across the shoulder.
