Chapter 40
He pushed open the door, and Anastasia walked in first, followed by him.
His phone suddenly vibrates from his pocket, and when he finds out it’s a call from his grandfather’s lawyer, he excuses himself and goes back to answer the call. After a few minutes, he returns and finds her waiting outside for him.
“Something has come up; I will visit next time; take care.” He draws near to kiss her, but she dodges him, which makes him angry.
“You should leave Mahlon,” she says, hoping he won’t leave, but he turns and leaves without saying a word to her.
She is disappointed at his behavior and hopes he is going to come back later. She returns inside and finds Nancy clutching the little boy, whose eyes are wide with anticipation of seeing someone other than his mother.
Anastasia is relieved that he didn’t see his son, and she is glad her son didn’t shout “Daddy” when he saw him enter.
