Liana’s chest was still rising too fast, her fingers tight around her keys as she stared at him.
“I’m… fine,” she said, though it came out softer than she intended. There was something like awe in her eyes as she looked at him. Not fear, not exactly. Just disbelief.
Like she had just watched something that was written for a movie scene. Cain caught it and he hated it a little, because to him, it was real. It was dangerous in ways she still did not understand.
“Get as many of your things as you can to feel comfortable for the night,” he said, already stepping past the body of the man on the floor. “You’re leaving with me.”
Liana blinked at him, then snorted out a small, disbelieving laugh. “What?”
