“Please, ma’am, this is a hospital,” the nurse pleaded, her hands gripping my shoulders as I thrashed against her. My tears went from trickles to a flood, burning my eyes as my chest heaved in short, uneven gasps.
I couldn’t stop crying—it was Ashley. My Ashley. The thought of her lying there, barely clinging to life, ripped through me like glass.
“Go, you f*cking murderer!” I screamed, my voice breaking, raw from shouting. “Go away from here!”
He stood a few feet away, face unreadable, his expression calm where mine was chaos. The sight of him only fueled the anger clawing at my throat.
Tears blurred my vision until all I saw was a haze of white and red—hospital walls and pain. My body felt heavy, weak. My legs wobbled beneath me, and my throat burned from screaming. The room tilted slightly, colors dulling around the edges.
I tried to keep my eyes open, tried to fight the blackness tugging at me, but it was no use.
