"I can't," I heard myself say, despite how much I wanted to kiss him back. It was unfair to kiss him when I had another man on my mind. Lazmo was right; I had to make a choice.
"Why not? You want to," he insisted arrogantly, still holding onto the back of my neck stubbornly.
"Because I like someone else."
There was no use beating around the bush when the truth was at the tip of my tongue. He stiffened at once and dropped his hands. I could feel the cold haze that had descended between us.
"Who is he?" he demanded, refusing to accept defeat.
I sighed, providing warmth for my cold arms by rubbing them with my palms. "It doesn't matter who he is. I can't. . .I can't do this anymore."
"Do what? What are you talking about?" he kept at it, prodding me needlessly.
"Please, leave. I beg you, just leave."
