I ran like the coward I was. I didn’t even look back, heading to the secret garden. The music was everywhere—the festivities, the screaming—and I just wanted some silence.

The sun was beginning to set, but I could see the path clearly. Although I had only been there twice, I knew the way like the back of my hand. My cheeks were stained with tears, and my mascara ran down in small, dark streams.
