Chapter 22
She still couldn’t believe her eyes and continued to gaze at the hidden compartment. She suddenly remembered her father’s question from earlier that evening. Although she had had her suspicions, now she couldn’t believe her own eyes. It seemed impossible that what was right in front of her could save Jasper from the mire he was trapped in. In a hurry, she took another book and placed it on top of the locking mechanism. She said nothing more to her mother and rushed downstairs to find a servant.
As she rushed out of the room, she encountered a maid who was still cleaning on the staircase. The maid quickly greeted her, but before she could say anything, Kattie spoke first.
“Please go to my mother’s room and remove all the glass shards. And remember not to touch or move any of the books on the table.”
