Julian looked at her in silence for a moment, then started fidgeting with one of the utensils, anxious. There were many diners, but to Elizabeth, it seemed like she could only hear the "ting-ting" of the fork hitting the burgundy tablecloth.
"Don't you have anything to say?" she asked loudly, attracting the attention of some people. "I thought maybe you would have something to reproach or..." She lowered her tone.
Julian shook his head and reached across the table to hold her hand, gently squeezing it. He waited for anything but the smile he flashed, so calm.
"I told you I would support you in whatever you decide, and I meant it," he reminded her.
"I know, it's just that I thought..."
"That I was playing a joke on you?" he asked, raising an eyebrow.
