Chapter 66
“This,” Cass says, turning from the cluttered rack and holding up what looks like sheer pink chiffon with a sparkling sequined belt.
I tilt my head.
“What is that supposed to be?”
“A harem concubine costume.”
She holds it by the belt, which apparently would rest on the hips of the unfortunate wearer. But from what I can see, there’s no top. Not even something bright and cheerful à la Barbara Eden in I Dream of Jeannie.
When I point that out, Cass just shrugs.
“Maybe they’re going for realism, right?”
“Maybe, but not for me. Banned.”
Marcus looks up from a few racks away.
“I have neither voice nor vote?”
“Of course not.”
We spend Saturday morning shopping for Halloween. We’re in Burbank, in a thrift store that mostly sells costumes from various TV shows. I don’t know what show that one’s from, but certainly not that classic 1960s sitcom.
