“I’m talking about fraud. The kind that gets the feds involved—racketeering and stock fraud.”
Marcus doesn’t say anything, but I’m relieved to see his grip loosen.
“Keep going.”
“I didn’t know when I got in and I left as soon as I saw what was happening. Brighton is why I decide to retire. Leave Atlanta.” He shrugs. “Of course, I can’t stand retirement.”
Marcus stays silent.
“I’ve known Nick a long time, and when I realize what I’ve stepped into, I confide in him. Apparently someone else does, too. He has no reason to snoop, and he certainly isn’t turning down handsome profits, but he finds a way to acquire those key parcels. As soon as he does, it’s over. Brighton disappears like smoke—and so does the danger of federal charges hanging over our heads. Everyone,” he adds, looking at me.
“Gabriela? I’m just your assistant.”
“And you could have walked away. At the very least they would have hauled you in as a witness and forced you to testify.
