It took all my bravery and pride not to come after her when she walked out of the door. I think I did great.
That wasn’t the first encounter after all these years that I expected. I thought it would be something I’d be ready for. Like in a formal event or a personal invitation. I didn’t think it would be in my own office before 8 in the morning.
Philip entered the door when Ashlene got out.
“Is that Attorney Ridley, sir? The youngest of them?” he asked, and I nodded.
“Yes. Do you need anything from her?”
He shook his head and left the room. That was weird. I didn’t know what that was about.
I finished my coffee… and then thought that maybe I should stop taking it just like how I used to. My anxieties and panic attacks worsened… but are they because of the caffeine?
As if to answer my question, the telephone rang. It’s the one I use to communicate with anyone in the building. I picked it up with my right hand.
“Hello?”
