I never really thought about how little I knew Adrian Kane.

I knew his name. I knew the things people said about him, the way everyone, including me, watched him like he was some puzzle they couldn’t quite figure out. I knew he was rich, attracted trouble, and had this way of looking at people that made them either flustered or terrified.

But beyond that? Beyond the rumors and the mystery? I didn’t actually know him.

And as I sat in his massive, borderline gothic kitchen, watching him move around like he actually belonged there, I realized how weird that was. Because for someone I’d spent so much time trying to avoid, Adrian had somehow managed to slip into my life in a way that felt…inevitable.
