My heart shatters as I watch Nadine lying there, pale and motionless. The sight of her like this makes me feel utterly helpless. I know what I feel for her is real—so real that it scares me. I’ve never felt this way about anyone before, and the intensity of it is almost overwhelming.  

She has a past she’s trying to escape from—I can see it in the way she flinches when I touch her, in the way her eyes dart around like she’s expecting something, or someone, to catch up with her. She’s new in Canada, and that only makes me more curious. What is she running from? And why does she seem so afraid to let anyone in?
