“Checked out?” I repeat, barely believing what I’m hearing.

“Yes, she left earlier today.”

I stand there, trying to process the news, my mind racing with questions. How could she leave without saying anything? Why didn’t anyone tell me? A heavyweight settles in my chest as confusion and frustration swirl inside me. How could she just go like that?

Without wasting another second, I yank my phone from my pocket and dial Sydney’s number. My fingers tighten around the device as it rings, my pulse hammering in my ears. She picks up on the third ring.

“What the hell happened?” I demand, with a sharp voice. “Why didn’t you tell me you were taking Nadine out of the hospital?”

Anger burns through me. Sydney knows how much I care about Nadine and how worried I’ve been. The fact that she made this decision without telling me makes my blood boil.
