“Understood,” I said with a small nod, masking my relief with nonchalance. Inside, my heart was racing with glee. “Thank you. And don’t drink on the job again.”
He grunted in response and returned to his post outside, the faint clinking of beer bottles fading as the door swung shut behind him.
