Chapter 4. She Is Pregnant
LENA
I woke up in the hospital again. I remembered everything that happened before I passed out. I will never forget how Dean held me and protected me. But he wasn't with me.
"Dean?" I asked my doctor.
He looked up from the tests. "Dean isn't here, Lena. He's gone."
How disappointed I am! It was obvious. Dean was now living a happy life with Carla, and I didn't matter to him.
"You're weak, Lena. Your health is getting worse," he announced, concerned. "Pregnancy is risky, Lena. Are you sure you want to continue with the pregnancy? You could lose your life, Luna. You're not in a condition to be a mother."
"No! I want to have my children! Don't say that, doctor!"
"Luna, I'm sorry, but you could lose your life," he repeated.
I didn't care. I wanted my babies to be born. It was them and me against the world.
"I command you not to disclose the information. Erase the records. I don't want anyone to know about my pregnancy. The Alpha and I have divorced, and he can't find out that I'm having twins. Dean rejected me, and I accepted the rejection."
"I figured it would happen soon. The Alpha has been cheating on you with Carla for the past two months, Luna."
"You knew?"
"I think almost the entire pack knows. Rumors spread."
They humiliated me.
The doctor said I couldn't leave the hospital, but I wanted to escape soon. I didn't care about my doctor's orders and left secretly. I arrived at the hotel and gathered all my things. My body ached, but it didn't stop me. I would travel far from the city, but I hadn't chosen a destination yet.
I called a taxi to go to the airport. I saw Carla before getting into the car.
"You're leaving? Great! I can finally live my happy life with Dean," Carla celebrated.
"I hope you live a happy life with him. Be careful, bitch! He might do to you what he did to me."
"Dean will never do that to me. Never come back to the city, Lena. Neither you nor your babies."
No!
"I don't know what you're talking about, Carla."
"Don't lie. I know you're pregnant. And if you dare to set foot in the city, I will kill you and your children. I hope rejection as Luna kills you before your pregnancy ends."
Her words were harsh and poisonous. How dare she say something so horrible to me?! I would kill her!
I got into the taxi. I cried the entire way to the airport. My husband left me, and my family turned their backs on me.
A new life awaited me somewhere else.
***
DEAN
A month has passed since Lena left the pack and departed. I never knew where she went. Her parents had no clue either. They were also concerned about their daughter.
"Do you care about her now? You hurt her a lot, Dean," my best friend scolded me.
Since Luna left, I've been talking about her. I never stopped worrying about Lena. I never stopped loving her. I acted coldly, but my love for her was never a lie. I fell in love with Lena and loved her with all my heart. However, I made Luna believe our relationship didn't matter to me.
One night, after work, I stopped at a bar. Carla was there. We drank together and got drunk. Carla and I lost consciousness and had sex. I got Carla pregnant. She confessed it to me a few weeks later. I believed her. The dates matched. That child was mine. Lena would never forgive me for what I had done.
My mind was clouded, and Carla took advantage to speak ill of Luna: she said that Luna didn't love me and that she was my wife out of convenience. I never believed Carla, but I pretended I did.
Still, I told Lena that I wanted us to get divorced. I rejected her. And she accepted. Why did she accept? Why didn't she fight for our marriage?
Carla was right. Lena didn't love me. Otherwise, she would have fought for me.
"Yes, I know, I'm an idiot. But I discovered she doesn't love me."
"Why are you so sure?"
"Because Lena didn't fight for our love."
My friend wasn't happy with my response. "The day will come when you see her with another man, and you'll regret leaving her. Carla is pregnant, and it's been your fault."
Carla was almost three months pregnant. But she wasn't the one I wanted to have children with.
"Shut up!" I don't want to imagine Lena with another man ever. "Why are we talking about Lena, Zed? Did you come to talk about her?"
"No. I came because I found out something important. I overheard Lena's doctor talking about her."
Did Lena's doctor know about her? Was Luna in good health?
"And?"
Zed pulled a medical file from his backpack. He gave it to me, and I reviewed it. What a shock!
"I know it's hard to believe, but it's true, Dean. You abandoned your pregnant wife. You kicked her out on the streets with your child. Are you happy?"
Zed held resentment for what I had done. Everyone in the pack loved Lena. Now that Carla took Lena's place, I could feel how people looked at me, not understanding the reason behind my actions.
"And that's not all. Do you remember the rumor about the curse? The curse of the rejection of the moon. Our families have been talking about it for years. Aren't you afraid it might be real?”
I read through the file again. It can't be real.
POSITIVE PREGNANCY RESULT
PATIENT: LENA MAX CLARK
"She's pregnant..." I absorbed the information.
Why didn't Lena tell me? She should have told me! I am the father of her child. I was going to search for her everywhere. I didn't care how long it took. I would find Lena.
"She'll have twins," Zed concluded.
