Nathan's POV
As soon as the words escaped my lips, I realized I had touched upon a sensitive subject. Alex's expression turned somber, and he paused for a moment before responding.
"There was an encounter with some rogue werewolves last night," he replied, his voice tinged with a mix of weariness and caution. "I had to defend us, protect us from them."
My heart sank at his words, realizing the danger he had faced while I remained safely inside the shelter. Guilt washed over me, and I couldn't help but feel a surge of concern for his well-being.
"I'm sorry, Alex," I said, my voice filled with genuine remorse. "I should have been there with you, fought alongside you."
He looked at me, his gaze softening, understanding evident in his eyes. "Nathan, you were safe inside the shelter. That was the best thing for both of us. I didn't want to put you in harm's way."
