Kai’s workplace.

Anna walked the final stretch to the company gates, her heart steady and fingers curled loosely around her phone. She checked the screen of her phone. It was 12:59 PM, and she was right on time to meet Kai during his break.

Without hesitation, she pushed through the front doors, greeted the receptionist with a nod, and made her way to the cafeteria like she had done a handful of times back when she used to visit Kai.

It was quieter than she remembered, less chatter, softer clinks of cutlery. She took a seat near the back, her eyes scanning casually over the room. A minute passed, and it clicked 1 pm. She looked up and watched Kai walk in.

Kai entered with a group of coworkers, laughing at something one of them said. His hand was resting on the back of the woman beside him, his wife.
