“I must speak to the king as soon as possible,” I began to say, even though I knew it was completely crazy. Maybe I’d take it back and go to sleep after dinner when they’d tell me it was a bad thing and a miserable idea.
“Do you think he’ll listen to you?” my mother asked with a hopeful look. “If you tell him everything you’ve been through, he’ll know. You’ll tell him what happened at school, the fights, the rumors about his juvenile delinquency, the damage he did to you when he wrote you off at school, and you almost got a bad grade. What’s being said about his family, the problems with illegal substances… There’s a lot to say about this guy.”
“Holy cow. You can’t be serious… Or are you?” my father asked with an incredulous look. “The king has better things to do than deal with gossip.”
“This isn’t gossip; this is the truth. You’re the one who doesn’t seem to care about your son’s work and especially his reputation.”
