My job, apparently, was to fill the orders that no one wanted and clean up the mess. To be honest, I did not care because I had nothing better to do at the moment, and a trip into town would distract me. Ever since I had seen Sallie and turned her down, something inside of me seemed to tighten up and not let my mind rest.
When I closed my eyes, I saw her in front of me all the time. I could not get her out of my mind, and her voice echoed in my body. I longed for these feelings to disappear at any cost so that they would not affect my performance. Sallie was like a witch, haunting my life even when she was not present at the moment.
“I am going to go now,” I said to Jacob as I watched him walk out the door of the courtroom. “I am not waiting any longer.”
