Chapter 37. A Job to Be Done

“What were you trying to do to me?” I asked him while I tied his hands and sat him down in a chair; he wouldn’t escape.
The man didn’t utter a single word; he only trembled and looked down at the floor as if he thought that would let him go.
“Why did you cut her tongue off?” I asked with more excitement; the fire in me grew, my eagerness to uncover the mystery.
A growl on his part was starting to annoy me; he was constantly making fun of my authority. I knew I wouldn’t hurt him or anything like that.
I looked at the woman, prostrate in her bed; her ragged breathing was easily perceived. I took her hand and promised her that I would find justice and that I would release her from that life of suffering. A laugh from the doctor almost gave me a heart attack.
