Upon seeing that symbol, I instantly touched my stomach, where the cook had stabbed me the first time I saw those letters with my own eyes.
The woman looked at me as if she was going to devour me, which made me shiver.
I wanted to leave there with the paper in hand, but I held back; perhaps I was prejudging the situation with my cruel prejudices. The woman was terrifying, but it was not her fault.
I thanked her and left her with the doctor again, keeping the paper to examine it later. Clarisa was looking at me with intrigue.
“Don’t you find it strange?” she asked; it was evident that she had many things on her mind.
“What do you mean?” I asked, stopping on the stairs to rest a bit; I was halfway up.
“You say the old doctor cut out her tongue, but… Nobody heard her screams, or why didn’t she attract attention? I mean, many guards patrol that part of the castle and should at least have heard her moans…”
