The time had come. Jacob stood at the children’s room door to signal that we had to leave. Dove went in to continue watching the children with Carmen.

I got up from the floor. I smiled, just imagining the beating I was going to give Karl put me in a good mood. Carmen stood in my way.

“Promise me you won’t kill him,” she said, in a pleading tone.

I looked at her with a hint of disgust. I was pretty tired of everyone telling me what to do. It didn’t use to happen like that. It annoyed me immensely. As if I were a dog on a leash that everyone could use when there was a war.

I ignored her without saying anything else. Dove said something to her, but I couldn’t hear what it was. Surely she was promising her some nonsense.
