Chapter 27. The Proposal and the Blessing

“All the warriors have been chosen, and the battle plan is in place. I suggest we all turn in early to surprise the vampires at dawn.” Chief Strongbow announced to both the Sauk and Fox tribes.

Keme started to walk toward his village when Chepi grabbed his arm.

“Can we talk for a minute before you head back to the tribe to rest?”

“Sure. What is it you want to talk about?”

“Not here,” Chepi whispered. “Follow me.”

Chepi led Keme to the forest. The two walked until they were at a large rock close to the brook that led to the waterfall near Zhang’s cottage.

“Why are we here, Chepi?”

“I want to be with you before you battle with the vampires.” She said as she laid her head on his chest. “I also wanted to hear your heartbeat as a reminder that you are strong and will come back to me in one piece.”

“Chepi,” he cupped her face and drew her forehead close to his, “nothing will happen to me. Both Wisakachek and Zhang have made me a strong warri
