Chapter 23
In Smith’s opinion, anyone who had a child and was still living on the wild side was more or less putting the child up for adoption. They knew from the beginning the child would also suffer but chose to disregard that. It was nobody’s fault if their decision affected their own kids. That was exactly how Smith learned that pulling the child card was a no-no and people would always misunderstand you. To him, it was all the job.
On a normal summer day in Ohio, he’d probably just walk past a druggie and a thief and extend handshakes if it came to that. He hated their guts and wished they met with the law, but becoming the law was something that left a slightly bitter taste in his mouth. People hated him, and he knew it. Most who didn’t hate him wished he wasn’t in their own space, and he knew that too.
