“And as you can see, I really don’t like that guy,” Mom added as she crossed her arms, now looking at the window. “He keeps on meddling. If only your father wasn’t backing him up, I might have kicked him out of the mansion.”

She sighed in frustration.

“Who cares if he owns Palmer Industries? He’s influential in his hometown, not in the States. Once you marry Hans, we’ll rise to the top, too. That’s why you should do your best, Serenity. You’re the Miller family’s only hope.”

I didn’t answer. My stomach churned upon hearing those words. Why would I save a family that didn’t need salvation in the first place? Even without the marriage, we’ll do fine. We’re already one of the most influential families in the States.
