I guessed I was just plain stupid, what was I thinking? That Lila would run into my arms?

Maybe she’d slam the door. Maybe she’d scream, throw shit, tell me to go to hell. Or maybe she wouldn’t answer at all — just silence. Which, honestly, I could’ve handled.

But that? What I saw?
