When Dahlia walked into my office, I knew something was wrong before she even said a word.
Her shoulders were stiff, her eyes dimmed, and her hands shook slightly as she placed an envelope on my desk. “Sir,” she began, voice barely above a whisper. “I came to submit this.”
Sir? I thought we’d passed that phase where she regarded me as her boss. Whatever happened…what made her like this…must have had to do with me.
I stared at it. The neat handwriting on the front read: Resignation Letter.
My stomach tightened. “What’s this?” I asked, though I already knew.
“I’m resigning,” she said quietly.
I leaned back in my chair, crossing my arms slowly. “You’re joking.”
“I wish I was,” she replied. “Loren asked me to drop this before the end of the day.”
