I tried to keep my face blank and not let my awe show for fear of offending Sergio, but he saw it on my face anyway and snorted dryly, “Cool, right? Especially for Verity, who everyone thought was going to end up selling cheap cr*ck on the streets for the rest of her life.”
Yeah... definitely not cheap cr*ck.
“It’s a big deal to me that she’s finally stepping up and becoming something, even if it still has undertones of shadiness,” he sighed, and a small nostalgic smile appeared on his face. I felt both relief and bone-crushing guilt; relief because Verity was in a much better place than she was last time and guilt because Sergio was so proud of her and very much oblivious to the threat that loomed over her. I thought about telling him everything; he seemed mature enough to handle it, but that beautiful smile was still on his face, and it would be ungodly of me to wipe it off with a couple of sentences.
