Chapter 43

Charles must have heard me gasp, and he turned around. I quickly tried to hide, but in my hurry, I accidentally knocked something over on my way back to the guest rooms. What was I thinking? I shouldn't have followed him in the first place!

"Stop there, Chloe," he called out calmly. I tried to ignore him and leave, but he didn't give me the chance. "Stop or you'll regret it!"

"I'm sorry, Mr. Smith. I didn't mean to intrude on your privacy. I only followed you because you forgot to give me a key to the room," I explained.

He scoffed at my explanation and remained suspicious of me. "What did you see?"

"Nothing," I lied once again.

"Are you sure?"

"No, um, yes," I stammered with my response because I wasn't used to lying.

"Tell me the truth," he ordered.
