Chapter 42. Desperate Times
Leila’s POV
“What is going on?” I asked, my heart racing.
“Michael’s condition has drastically turned for the worse. Doctors are hopeless. We have to reach the hospital as soon as possible.”
My whole world was all but crashing down. “What do you exactly mean, Dominic? What is happening?”
“His leukemia. It made a sudden leap forward. I’m getting off work now. I’m en route to pick you up. We gotta go.”
His words didn’t even curve around my head. I was shaking my legs, reaching for my coat. “I shall be ready. Please hurry.”
I waited in the living room and after some minutes, Dominic burst in, his face grim. “Leila, we have to go. Now.”
I nodded, my throat tight. “I’m ready.”
A strained silence of driving, the hum of the engine, and my ragged breathing are the only cadences. Outside, the familiar city lights blurred; their usual comfort was cold and distant.
