“What were you doing before I came in?” Wayne asked as he kissed Olive’s neck gently in the kitchen. He decided not to think about how to tell her the reason for the meeting just yet—at least, not until after dinner.

“Oh, I was feeling hungry. You know I skipped lunch, so I was just going to make myself a thick smoothie,” she answered, and he released her.

“A thick smoothie,” he repeated, and she chuckled before nodding.

“See, I already cut the fruit. I was going to blend them when you arrived. You have a smoothie blender here. I was so thrilled when I saw it,” she said, pointing toward the kitchen counter where she had arranged her fruit in a ceramic bowl.
