Chapter 75. Back to the Castle
Terry and Crusoe accompanied Wayne to the car, scanning their surroundings to see if anything unusual stood out or if anyone was watching them. Outside, however, everything was quiet. Only a few policemen stood on guard around the perimeter. Wayne approached the vehicle, and Terry opened the back door so he could lay Olive across the seat.
“You’re driving, Terry,” Wayne said. Instead of laying her down, he slid onto the seat while continuing to cradle Olive in his arms. He couldn't bring himself to part with her. Terry nodded and climbed into the driver's seat.
Crusoe took the passenger side, and Terry drove out. Throughout the journey, Wayne remained hyper-alert. He kept Terry from driving too fast, partly because he didn't want the speed to disturb his mate. At the same time, she slept so peacefully, and partly because he was listening intently, filtering the ambient sounds of the environment
