The dishes were stacked around me in never-ending piles. As fast as I managed to take care of one, Suzie would stroll in with a grin and plop down another set. I could fully understand why others quit. It didn’t help the woman insisted on pulling on my cat tail every chance she got. Was my shift over yet? I hadn’t even managed to break away from the kitchen.

“Don’t I get a break?” I demanded.

Suzie looked over at me, her lips curling into a sneer. Seriously, why did she insist on being so nasty to everyone? It had to be exhausting.

“Break? Why in the world would you get one of those? We don’t even know if you’re going to last that long, so you should try to work as much as you can. Once Sergio gets here he’ll make the final decision.”

I didn’t want to wait for Sergio to get there. I needed to investigate, find out more about my lady, find out more about everything. And I wasn’t able to do any of that when I was up to my elbows in dish-water
