Author POV

Damian pushed open the door to Myles’s office with a beating heart. Anna had only given him a tight smile and said, “He’s in. Go right ahead.” Her voice held no warmth, and that only made the fear in his chest grow tighter.

Inside the office, Myles sat behind his big desk with his chair turned a little toward the window. He had already loosened his tie and the top button of his shirt. He looked calm, way too calm.

Serena was sitting right on the edge of the desk. Her legs were crossed, and her eyes were fixed on Damian the moment he stepped in.

“Sir,” Damian said carefully as he tried to keep his voice steady. “You wanted to see me.”

Myles didn’t even answer right away. He just stared with his face blank of emotions. Then he spoke with his tone low and almost gentle.

“Why weren’t you at work early today, Damian?”

Damian cleared his throat.

“There was a problem with my car,” he said. “It wouldn’t start this morning. I
