Serena POV

I straightened my back and put on a smile the moment Davies entered the building with his colleagues.

“Detective Davies,” I said brightly. “We meet again.”

He didn’t answer right away, though; he just stood there looking around the lobby with his eyes moving over the chairs, the front desk and the people standing still. His face was unreadable all this while, like he was going to find all the answers he needed just by glaring at everyone.

A man beside him stepped forward.

“Agent Londonderry, FBI,” he said while holding out a badge. His voice was calm, but I saw the cuts on his cheek and a bruise dark around one eye.

I nodded and shook his hand.

“Mrs Serena Voss,” I replied calmly. “Are you both all right? Did something happen on the way here?”

Davies finally looked at me with a slight frown, and then he moved closer, lowering his voice so only I could hear.

“Maybe you should ask your husband,” he whispered.
