Chapter 61. Losing It All and Melanie’s Desperation

Serena remained silent as Melanie took her by the hand and led her into the yard of a modest house.

“From now on we’ll live here, Serena…” Melanie said. She knocked on the door several times until a baritone voice came from inside the house.

“Just a moment,” she said as the door swung open.

There, towering over her, stood a man of great height. His fierce face, supported by a sharp gaze and tattoos drawn all over his arms to his neck, made Serena squeeze the hem of Melanie’s shirt and then hide behind her mother’s back out of fear.

“Melanie… who did you come with?” she asked and then tilted her head briefly to glance at Serena who was so scared behind Melanie’s back, before finally turning her gaze back to Melanie.

“I came with Serena,” Melanie replied as she reached back and took Serena’s hand to invite her to stand beside her. “Serena, this is Papa Jack… Your papa.”
