I closed the distance between the cell and me by walking there. My mom then came into view. She looked tired and had fresh beating marks on her arms. “Mom, are you okay? What happened to you?” I reached for her through the spaces between the bars of the cell. 

She smiled sadly and then sniffled. “I’m fine, my love.” Then her eyes landed on Jade that was behind me. “And who is this fine young man?” She coughed lightly.
